34:14 If God ¹  were to set his heart on it, ² 

and gather in his spirit and his breath,

Galatia 5:16-17

5:16 But I say, live ³  by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. ⁴  5:17 For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires ⁵  that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to ⁶  each other, so that you cannot do what you want.

[34:14]  ¹ tn Heb “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[34:14]  ² tc This is the reading following the Qere. The Kethib and the Syriac and the LXX suggest a reading יָשִׂים (yasim, “if he [God] recalls”). But this would require leaving out “his heart,” and would also require redividing the verse to make “his spirit” the object. It makes better parallelism, but may require too many changes.

[5:16]  ³ tn Grk “walk” (a common NT idiom for how one conducts one’s life or how one behaves).
